World Prematurity Day

Today, in honor of Olivia and the millions of babies and families who have been affected by prematurity, Olivia and I will be wearing purple.

15 million babies are born preterm around the world—that’s 1 in 10. More than 1 million babies die due to complications of preterm birth, that is 1 baby every 30 seconds, and many of those who survive premature birth, face a lifetime of disability.

Today is World Prematurity Day.

Join us on Facebook and Twitter to make this global effort visible.

As most of you all know, Olivia was born premature at 26 weeks and 3 days. I had exceptional care during my pregnancy and was EXTREMELY careful while pregnant, yet we still delivered a premature baby. I was in excellent health prior to my pregnancy and up until we had Olivia, we could NEVER have predicted we would have a premature baby.
You can read posts from our NICU journey here.

Some families aren't as lucky. Some families go home with out a baby. Some babies don't make it. Some babies do and have lifelong disabilities. We witnessed the heartache and hardships people and families went through in the NICU. Some people and families have a great support system, some do not. Some are extremely educated and wanted a baby more than anything, and some the complete opposite. Either way EVERY baby is SUCH a precious miracle!

We are EXTREMELY lucky! We have a healthy, perfect, beautiful little girl. On November 23rd, we will be celebrating Olivia's 18 month birthday! I sometimes forget that Olivia was born way too soon. That she only had a TEN percent chance to live. That she spent 80 days in the NICU. I look at OUR precious miracle and can't imagine life with out our Olivia. My heart aches for those who weren't as lucky as us to have such a little hero in our lives!

Raising awareness of this problem is the first step to defeating it. To help, join the March of Dimes for Prematurity Awareness Month® this November. The month is an opportunity to draw attention to the problem and the millions of babies and families who are affected. Of particular note: November 17 is World Prematurity Day and when the March of Dimes and our global partners take on the Web and the world to show how widespread premature birth is.

Congrats on your little miracle! We have a once micro-preemie too, born at 28 weeks, and an angel baby born at 13 weeks, and another miracle born at 36 weeks.

What a precious little miracle you have. My daughter was also born premature, at 36 weeks and spent 10 days in the NICU. Every day with her is a blessing.

I did not know that World Prematurity Day even existed! You baby girl is truely a blessing! I too was a premature baby, came 3 months early!! Aside from spending months in NICU I am blessed to say I'm totally healthy and didn't have any complications due to being preterm, beside from slight vision problem. So congrats again on your healthy baby girl!
